Rina awarded F31!

After months of having to keep our collective metaphorical mouth shut about her phenomenal score, the lab is excited to announce that Rina Matsuda was awarded an F31 fellowship from the NIH!

This highly competitive fellowship will fund Rina’s dissertation work and indicates that she is one of the USA’s most promising young scientists.

Congratulations, Rina!

SANIPACK at CGIU!

The lab is excited to congratulate Daniel Akuma and the SANIPACK team on their acceptance into the Clinton Global Initiative University 2021 cohort! Through this opportunity, Daniel and team will have access to targeted mentoring, funding streams and a global network of students turning their innovative ideas into action.

As their call to action project, Daniel and team will operationalize SANIPACK - a portable system for decontaminating and reusing N95 masks in order to keep healthcare workers and patients safe during the ongoing shortages occurring in Africa and worldwide.

We’re so proud of the work you’re doing! The lab is sure we’ll be seeing you on CBS news soon!

Stefan and Ronit Honored by NSF!

The lab happily congratulates Stefan Peterson who was awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship! These awards are extremely competitive and come with three years of funding to better allow Stefan to pursue his research dreams. Aim for the immunology stars, Stefan!

The lab would also like to mention, in a very honorable way, that Ronit Schwartz was awarded an Honorable Mention for her proposal to the program.

Congratulations to you both!

Daniel S. honored by the Sweden-America Foundation!

The lab congratulates Daniel S. who was recently inducted as a permanent member of the Sweden-America Foundation Society. The Foundation describes this award thusly:

Sverige-Amerika Stiftelsen möjliggör akademisk utbildning och forskning i USA och Kanada för talangfulla och motiverade studenter. När de återvänder till Sverige har de med sig spjutspetskompetens, internationella erfarenheter och kontakter av stort värde för svenskt näringsliv, samhällsliv och forskning.

With the help of Google translate, the lab has learned that this high honor provides funding for Daniel to carry out his research in the lab and means that he is now a member of the Swedish Royal Family.

It is possible that we got some of those details incorrect, but grattis to Daniel nonetheless!

Daniel A wins hackathon!

The lab congratulates Daniel Akuma and the rest of his team, SANIPACK, who emerged victorious at the recent “Africa Takes on COVID-19” hackathon challenge at MIT.

He and his team are designing and testing a portable UV device that can be used to sterilize protective masks to combat PPE shortages during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

Congratulations, Daniel and SANIPACK, and best of luck throughout your research and development process!
